Victor Mine Maintenance and Supply Chain Improvement Programme

We worked with De Beers to design and implement a maintenance and supply chain improvement program for its Victor Mine operations. Since 1888, De Beers has been involved in all aspects of the diamond business. From its mining operations across Africa and Canada, the company supplies approximately 35 per cent of the world’s rough diamonds. With two mines in Canada, De Beers’ Victor Mine is located in the James Bay Lowlands in Northern Ontario and comprises 18 kimberlite pipes, 16 of which contain diamonds.

The programme focused on: creating disciplined work management practices; assisting with the implementation of the client’s business transformation program in line with global mining best practices; and the design and delivery of a coaching program for all maintenance staff. We also assisted with the identification and development of the company’s high performing employees and applied our supply chain knowledge to improve parts availability.Within 10 months, we delivered improved plant performance and operations at open pit mine through:

  • Maintenance improvements using an integrated and disciplined process by a common ERP platform for all departments
  • Reduction in external maintenance contractor expenditure by using internal skill set when available
  • Improving asset reliability by implementing a rigorous maintenance inspection schedule to eliminate or minimise failures
  • Implementing an ERP to create accurate reports using improved quality of data and an intuitive and easy use interface
  • Alignment of employees to accurate roles and providing training and coaching of new processes and tools to increase adoption levels.
