Colombo-Katunayake Expressway
The Colombo-Katunayake Expressway provides a high-speed road link between Colombo City and Free Trade Zone at Katunayake, as well as the Bandaranayake International Airport. The 4-lane divided Expressway, approximately 24.6 km in length, is one of the first fee levying roads to be built in Sri Lanka. A substantial length of the Expressway is located on very soft ground making soft ground treatment a major project component.
Key features of the Expressway included:
- 4 interchanges at New Kelani Bridge, Peliyangoda, Ja-Ela and Katunayake
- 2 major bridges, a 70 m bridge at Ja-Ela and an 80 m bridge at Dandugam Oya
- 13 overbridges
- 6 underpasses
- 18 minor bridges
- Drainage structures
As an Employer’s Representative, we had the responsibility to ensure the design and construction of the Expressway conforms to specified standards and quality. A key component was the provision of training and transfer of technology to Road Development Authority (RDA) personnel.
