Toronto, CANADA, 27 September 2018Surbana Jurong and Autodesk Asia today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly promote advanced technology adoption, sustainable design excellence and digital skills development to bolster Surbana Jurong’s competitive differentiation and technological leadership.

At the heart of the collaboration is the extension of Building Information Modelling (BIM) beyond architectural design into Integrated Digital Delivery (IDD) for Surbana Jurong’s projects and other transformative areas. These include Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA), using artificial intelligence for design, and leveraging BIM and mobile technology on the jobsite to enable cloud-based collaboration and reporting.”

IDD is a key thrust under Singapore’s Construction Industry Transformation Map (ITM). Enabled by BIM, IDD fully integrates processes and stakeholders along the value chain through advanced info-communications technology and smart technologies.

“As a technologically driven leader in urban and infrastructure consulting, Surbana Jurong is committed to driving digital transformation across the built industry’s value chain. This is why we value working with technology leaders like Autodesk who are as dedicated to innovating with their toolsets as we are on our projects,” said Wong Heang Fine, Group Chief Executive Officer, Surbana Jurong.

Together, Surbana Jurong and Autodesk will also explore the development of a Centre of Excellence and robust training and development programme built on Autodesk technology to ensure the former and its extensive partner ecosystem are future ready.

“A growing middle class creates inevitable demand for more housing, transportation, and infrastructure worldwide. Automation presents an opportunity to do things better and is key to ensuring that industry can deliver on these needs while balancing the need to preserve our environment and natural resources,” said Scott Herren, chief financial officer, Autodesk. “Surbana Jurong’s leadership in these areas make it a standout force in the market, and we are excited about the next milestone in our continued collaboration.”

China, 31 May 2017 – Surbana Jurong has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Arctron Data & Innovation Technology Co., Ltd (ADIT) to jointly develop Facilities Management (FM) related software products based on Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology. The MOU was signed by Teo Eng Cheong, Chief Executive Officer International (Singapore, Southeast Asia, North Asia) of Surbana Jurong and Li Jia Jun, General Manager of ADIT, at the grand opening of ADIT in Shanghai.

ADIT is the newly established digital arm of Arcplus Group PLC, one of China’s most influential architectural design institutions, that has completed over 30,000 design and consulting projects worldwide. ADIT will spearhead the digital transformation of Arcplus Group and focus on research and integration of digital technology such as BIM, BIM FM, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing.

Under the MOU, Surbana Jurong and ADIT will collaborate to develop a BIM:FM software. ADIT will provide product development and technology support services while Surbana Jurong will contribute in FM domain knowledge. The developed technology will serve as an extension of the value chain from architecture, engineering and construction industry into the FM industry. It will also increase the productivity of FM managers. Digitising the FM processes through BIM:FM technology brings benefits to building owners in terms of cost saving for their long term building maintenance and operational cycle.

“The collaboration between Surbana Jurong and ADIT will put us ahead of the digital curve. The MOU is aligned with Surbana Jurong’s digital transformation to introduce digital tools across our services to raise productivity and performance of manpower-intensive businesses such as FM for our customers. Our sterling track record in managing operationally-ready facilities testifies to our capability and experience. We are excited to work with like-minded companies, such as ADIT, to complement and grow with us,” Mr Teo said.

“Digitisation is playing an increasingly important role in the construction industry. Digitising the operation and maintenance of buildings will greatly improve management efficiency, as well as save manpower and material resources. BIM technology-based FM will achieve the ultimate value of BIM technology and is the foundation of constructing intelligent buildings, parks and even smart cities. The collaboration between Surbana Jurong and ADIT is a win-win partnership that will take FM as key point and gradually expand to all aspects of digitising the engineering construction industry,” Mr Li said.

An interview with Eugene Lim: Setting new benchmarks in architectural design

Eugene, who joined SJ six months ago, was interviewed on his cutting-edge work on automating architectural design. Photo Credit: The Straits Times.

Eugene Lim, Surbana Jurong’s Architectural Associate from Singapore’s Building Information Modelling and Design Technology team (Urban Development 2), was featured in The Sunday Times on the topic ‘Jobs of Tomorrow’ on Sunday, 19 March 2017. It is part of a series sponsored by the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) which profiled recent graduates in future-ready jobs related to technology.

Eugene, who is among SUTD’s pioneer batch of graduates in the Master of Architecture programme, currently leads a team which builds automation capabilities for the design of residential housing.

He shared some highlights from the interview.

After a four-month internship with Surbana Jurong (SJ) which included a brief stint at US-based design software firm FLUX, you decided to stay on to pursue a career with SJ. What prompted your decision?

Eugene: I am passionate about technology and housing design, and SJ is a good fit for me as I am able to focus on both of my passions here. I can be thinking about automating processes one moment and studying the historical and socio-political influences on housing the next! My superiors are also one of the key deciding factors as they are open-minded and receptive to new solutions. They give me the flexibility and freedom to explore new ideas, which I appreciate.

Why is technology important in architecture?

Eugene: Automation is on the rise for many industries as we continue to look for ways to increase quality, reduce delivery time and operating costs. Architecture is no different. Architectural design has always been a lengthy and iterative process, and my team aims to make an impact to the industry by using automation to make design work less arduous and achieve higher accuracy in our projects.

What is your team working on that can disrupt the industry?

Eugene: Our team is leading research and development efforts in SJ to include automation within the design process. We have developed an application that aims to revolutionise the architectural design industry. The Housing Computational Design Tool, as we call it, combines architecture with computer programming, and is built to cut the building design process by up to half the time while reducing errors in our work. This technology can be scaled for other sectors such as commercial and industrial developments. When humans and machines work together, I believe it will bring about even higher quality master plans, buildings and homes for people.

Surbana Jurong wins BCA BIM Platinum Award

BCA BIM platinum award
Winning entry graphics of Blossom Spring @ Yishun

Surbana Jurong has won the Platinum Award in the BCA Building Information Modelling (BIM) Awards 2016 Project Category, for the HDB BTO project Blossom Spring @ Yishun. This project comprises six blocks of 14-storey residential building with a total of 1,079 units, one block of multi-storey car park with commercial/community facilities, a precinct pavilion, Electrical Sub-Station and a neighbourhood park.

The project team is elated with this win. “We are extremely proud and excited because this is the first Surbana Jurong and first HDB project to win the BCA BIM Platinum Award. It wasn’t easy as we faced fierce competition from this year’s project submissions of various building types and complexities. We could not have achieved this without the dedication, strong collaboration and hard work from the BIM and VDC teams. At the industry level, I am heartened to see how many companies are leveraging on BIM to achieve better quality, save time and increase productivity,” said Patrick Lee, Director of Architecture.

The project will be completed by May 2018.

Introduced in 2014, the annual BCA BIM Awards recognise the contribution of project teams in their BIM projects implementation during design, construction and facility management stages. The awards aim to encourage project teams to adopt a more collaborative design and construction process by leveraging on the BIM technologies and processes to meet project goals, as well as recognise project teams for their outstanding examples of BIM use in enhancing productivity.
