A Chile-based mining group has engaged SMEC, member of the Surbana Jurong Group, to develop maintenance plans for its copper facility, located 3,000 m above sea level in the northern region of Chile. This makes it the Asset Management team’s fifth consecutive South American contract in five months.

SMEC will develop and update the structural integrity maintenance plans for the crushing area comprising the primary, secondary and tertiary crushers, solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) plant, mineral transport systems and tailings.

The scope of work includes the generation of a new structural maintenance strategy for equipment, development of individual plans, and the adjustment of all bill of materials (BOMs) to be integrated into the company’s enterprise resource planning system (SAP). In addition, SMEC will issue recommendations for non-destructive testing (NDT) and the updating of predictive techniques, including thermography, ultrasound and vibrations.

Ronald Galisky,President of SMEC’s Asset Management operations in the Americas, stated, “The four-month project reinforces our long-term relationship with this mining group, and expands our service offering to other clients.”
