Caspar Baum, Surbana Jurong’s Director of Aviation, is the winner of the Mike Davis Award for lifetime achievement, conferred by the Asian Business Aviation Association (AsBAA). He received his award at the association’s Icons of Aviation charity gala on 10 November in Hong Kong.
The award, one of the few in the world that acknowledge the contributions of individuals in the aviation industry, recognises Caspar’s nearly 30 years of commitment to architecture and specifically to his work in aviation architecture in the past two decades.
Caspar was born in Hannover, Germany, and graduated as an architect from University of Stuttgart. His wife Luisa Makariadi also works in Surbana Jurong, and is a senior aviation consultant like himself. They are part of the Surbana Jurong Aviation team working to secure the hottest project in aviation right now – to design Changi Airport’s Terminal 5.
Surbana Jurong (SJ) has been recognised for its exemplary landscape design work at the IFLA Asia-Pac Landscape Architecture Awards 2017. The team earned an Honourable Mention for its landscape master planning work for the “12km Han Cheng Riverfront with 700Ha Theme Park” project in ShaanXi, China. It is the first cultural-tourism project undertaken by SJ.
The project team, led by Oliver Ng, Deputy Director of Landscape Planning and Design, had to overcome many challenges to meet project requirements, chief of which is to have a sustainable development that can transform the city’s economy and reduce its reliance on agriculture while preserving the local culture. The team’s winning proposal centres on an innovative Integrated Hub that will connect visitors to a community and sports hub, an agriculture and exposition park, and the Ju River Wetland ecological park. Special care was taken to protect the rich heritage of the historic city while enhancing its surrounding geography and biodiversity along the 12km riverfront.
This includes creating buffer zones and using softscape materials to form a cohesive landscape. The design also features an integrated storm water management and cleansing system which will help cleanse and retain water at the site for future use, especially when the city faces water shortages during the summer.
Surbana Jurong’s North Asia team has won first prize in Chongqing Aerotropolis Township Urban Design competition, its first transit-oriented development (TOD)-driven design win.
Chongqing is an emerging mega-city in southwest China and, according to a Telegraph report this year, is ranked 8th among the world’s cities with the most number of skyscrapers.
The township, which spans 2.2 km², sits within the 33 km² Chongqing Aerotropolis, with Jiangbei International Airport as the central transportation node. The project scope includes residential, commercial (office/ retail/ F&B), aviation training facilities, healthcare facilities, schools, a neighbourhood centre and parks.
Teo Eng Cheong, CEO, International, notes that the win will put SJ in a good position to pursue design consultancy work downstream for the rest of the aerotropolis.
Surbana Jurong’s Planning Group (SJPG) has walked away with its biggest haul yet at the SIP Planning Awards.
It snapped up five awards in four categories at the Singapore Institute of Planners’ 5th SIP awards, winning in all the categories it competed. Hangzhou, a three-hour bus-ride from Shanghai, is famed for its historical relics, natural beauty, quaint towns and charming waterways. The capital of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou, is also home to West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba. Adding to its list of tourist attractions in the future will be the Jing Hang Grand Canal Theatre & Park. Our design team has a significant role to play in the city’s upcoming attraction, as they have just clinched the International Property Awards-Asia Pacific “Best in Leisure Architecture-China”, for the provision of architecture and landscape design consultancy for the theatre and park.
Surbana Jurong (SJ) China was engaged to provide architectural concept design consultancy services for the theatre, as well as to offer landscape design for the adjacent park and plazas. The architectural design and landscape design took about one and a half years to complete, starting August 2015. Construction works on the project will soon begin.
Recognising the team’s design excellence in architecture and landscape design, the organisers presented the award to Wong Tim Fatt, North Asia division’s Vice President (Architectural), at a presentation ceremony in Bangkok. According to organisers of the International Property Awards, the projects are judged by a highly experienced team of professionals, who cover the whole range of property disciplines. Winning the award was no easy feat, as the competition was opened to property professionals from around the world.
Kudos to our design team (architectural) in Shanghai! For the record, team members are: Wong Tim Fatt, Guo Yin Mei, Dong Jing Jing, Richard Cruz, Andrew Lim, Li Ming Ming, Yang Hou Jin and Jin Hui Fen.
We are pleased to be featured once again among the world’s top design firms, and even more pleased that we have moved up the ranks from No. 48 a year ago.
While the ENR rankings are but one measure of our growth, it nonetheless reflects that Surbana Jurong’s strategy to provide complete value-chain solutions continues to bear fruit. We remain focused on building our capabilities in the urban, industrial and infrastructure space and look forward to more successes ahead!
